Fire Insert with Delft Tiles
We have this lovely cast iron fire insert with Delft tiles set into it, looks beautiful! The fire insert itself dates from the late 19th Century while the tiles date from around 100 years earlier. The tiles are English made (probably from Liverpool) and are handpainted, polychrome Delft tiles from the second half of the 18th Century. Each tile shows a different riverbank or shipping scene with a lattice border and floral spandrels. Three of the tiles are damaged, one has an open crack running down it while the other two are less obvious until up close, one with a cracked bottom corner and one with a three-point surface crack.
